1. Seed trays and Pots
In order to start your gardening, you will need somewhere to put your seeds and seedlings of course. The fruits Herbs or vegetables which you are going to plant will grow to a variety of different Heights and sizes which will require different sizes of trays for you to purchase. There are plenty of options available in the market in the form of plastic trays.
However, they are not the best options because they tend to break and crack if left in the Sun for a prolonged period of time. Instead of going for plastic trays, you can try all-natural peat pots that are biodegradable and compostable. In case you want something more study or decorative you can go with Terracotta pots.
2. Watering can
If you or someone who is interested in Indoor gardens or house plants watering can be really beneficial. You can find second-hand watering cans at an op-shop or thrift shop. Try finding a can which is large in size this will ensure great water-holding capacity. You can always buy a new watering can from your local nursery or rural supply store.
Just make sure to stay away from cans that are made up of plastic or non-biodegradable material.
3. Garden Hose
If you are someone with a large outdoor Garden you will require a garden hose in order to water the area. Hoses come in a variety of lengths so you need to factor in how big your yard is before making a purchase. This would ensure that you do not end up purchasing a hose that fails to reach areas of your garden and is not long enough.
When choosing the material of hoses go for natural rubber instead of PVC. These are synthetic and made from toxic chemicals and don’t break down well. If budget isn’t an issue you can go for the best quality eco-friendly hose available.
4. Certified organic seeds
If you want to start your gardening journey right from scratch instead of buying seedlings or a full-grown plant you can prefer to purchase some organic seeds from reputable nurseries. This would also save a lot of money. Certified organic seeds come from a plant that has been grown without the use of synthetic chemicals and therefore is sustainable.
5. Envelopes, jars and containers
To save the seeds for the next growing season you will need something to place them in. you can go with envelopes or some kind of air-tight jars or containers. Make sure that there is no moisture left before storing the seeds.
You can now put the seeds into the envelope, write the date and type of seed, put them in the jar and keep it secure and away from humidity and rodents. The container should be kept in a place which is cool, dark and dry. There is no need to buy fancy containers or jars, you can search for them in your old items and reuse or recycle them.
6. A trowel and weeding fork
This equipment will help you to dig and move around your garden to keep the weeds away. Use a trowel with a wooden handle instead of a plastic one. Once you are done with the job of weeding, put the trowel and weeding fork away. Leaving your equipment in the sun can cause quick deterioration and you have to replace them a lot sooner than intended.
7. Natural Twine
Sometimes you need to tie the plants to garden stakes or lift them up from the ground and make the garden beds look tidier. In order to do that you need twines. Go for twine that is made up of jute or hemp or any other natural fibres instead of Nylon or other synthetic materials.
Twine made up of natural fibres is biodegradable and does not cause any harm to the environment whereas synthetic twine won’t decompose. This can be hazardous to wildlife when left in the environment.
